The Democratic National Convention 1936
This book was personally signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and is numbered 131/2500 ... It was formerly owned by a library and subsequently discarded. It was bought on eBay and donated to us for resale and to help fund our mission.
This is the letter that was enclosed with the book:
Dear Mr. Harvey:
When we published the Democratic Convention Book of 1936, with considerable difficulty we obtained a promise from the President that he would personally autograph 2,500 copies, which would be issued as a private de luxe edition, with a special covering and with the name of the purchaser in gold letters.
In order to give everyone in the country an opportunity to subscribe for this limited edition we are assigning so many copies to each state. The cost of this special book is $100 and in my opinion, as time goes on will be worth a great deal more than this.......
W. Forbes Morgan, Treasurer ...
Harvey, Guy H. — of Yankton, Yankton County, S.Dak. Democrat.
Alternate delegate to Democratic National Convention from South Dakota, 1944, 1956. Research did not reveal how he came to get a book if not a delegate in 1936. Probably got it for $100 per the above letter. Apparently 10 copies were allocated to each state.
Buried at:
Garden of Memories-Yankton Cemetery
Yankton County, South Dakota
Guy H. Harvedy 1891-1969
Currently, Internet research reveals available copies at prices up to $4,500. James Roosevelt's copy sold at auction a few years ago for $3000. Patient waiting can sometimes surrender these books for much less. This book condition is excellent, save for the usual edge discoloration, and is consistent with what one would expect of a 76 year old book.
Complete copies are somewhat rare because many owners cut out the signature page to frame the hand colored etching of the White House.
Email me about this historical piece SIGNED by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
